Two more people have been quarantined amid fears they may have been exposed to the SARS virus at the Ottawa Hospital's General campus.

One of the people ordered into isolation is a nurse, while the other is one of 250 patients believed to have had contact with the original health care worker, a male nurse, quarantined at the General campus last week.

The male nurse was working in the emergency ward on May 14 when a woman from Toronto was treated for symptoms consistent with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. When he began exhibiting symptoms that can be caused by SARS, he was put under medical investigation at the hospital.

Yesterday, because of improved health, he was allowed to go home, under the condition that he remain quarantined there.

The second nurse was also working on May 14, when the sick person from Toronto came into the emergency room. She has also been placed in home quarantine because she is exhibiting some symptoms.

"The nurse has not been feeling well, so we'd rather not take any chances," said Dr. Robert Cushman, the city's medical officer of health. He added there are still no "probable" or "suspected" cases of SARS in Ottawa and the quarantines are just a matter of precaution.

Health officials were busy all weekend fielding calls from former Ottawa Hospital patients who had potential contact with the male nurse.

Officials had issued an appeal urging anyone who had been in the emergency department of the General campus during the nurse's last two shifts -- overnight Monday, May 26 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and Thursday May 29 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. -- to call the SARS information line at 724-4222.

City spokesman Michael FitzPatrick said it's still important for people who visited the hospital during the specified hours to check in with health officials even if they feel fine. And if they don't, don't go out.

"What they are told to do is to just keep an eye on yourself and if you do feel lousy, get tired, develop a cough, get a fever, or anything else, stay home. Don't go to work, don't go shopping and give us another call back," said Mr. FitzPatrick.

Under procedures adopted Friday, visitors must pass through entry-point screening desks to determine level of risk. Hand-washing is mandatory.

Patients are now restricted to two visitors a day and visiting hours have been limited to between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.
