Breakdancing emerged in the early 1970s as part of the hip-hop scene popular amongst African-American and Latino youths in New York City. The dance form, which melds together different artistic, ethnic and cultural dance styles, became wildly popular, and quickly spread around the world. As more and more people engaged in breaking the world over, more and more cultural and ethnic influences began to show themselves in the dancing.
