With today's exchange rate, nothing is really worth buying in the states unless you already own US dollars. Depending on how long you'd stay outside of the country, your limit varies from $250 to $750 with the exception of tabacco and alcohol. Check CCRA website for details (for God sake, just google it!) From my experience, the Canada Custom checks a lot frequently since 9-11, so watch out and get rid of the tags and original packaging.
A few interesting spots:
Boston common/public garden,
Cambridge (yeah Harvard and MIT),
Cape Cod is really not that interesting if you don't have a cottage down there,
And I don't think you'd have much time visiting museums, however if you do, make sure to check out the Museum of Fine Arts , they carry a large selection of Paul Cézanne's paintings.
p.s. buy your alcohol in NH on your way back, it's just on the side of the highway.
