In the Move to Mass Higher Education

Refreshments and conversation following the presentation

Everyone is welcome.*

This talk is based on a study of Chinese universities in their move to mass higher education, at a time of China’s rise as an economic and geopolitical force in world affairs. Dr. Hayhoe led a project which studied twelve universities and resulted in a recently published book. The presentation will highlight five case studies of universities in different regions of the country, and representing different curricular emphases.

Dr. Hayhoe will show how China’s top-level universities have maintained and strengthened unique identities in their move to mass higher education, rather than submitting to pressure to conform to the global research university model. The presentation will include photos of symbolic campus spaces selected by university leaders, faculty and students will be shown, and the presentation will conclude with reflections on an emerging Chinese model of the university.

Prof. Hayhoe is eminently qualified for this subject. She has been engaged in Asian Education for more than 30 years, including foreign expert at Fudan University in Shanghai, Head of the Cultural Section of the Canadian Embassy in Beijing, and Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Education. She has taught at OISE/UofT off and on since 1986.
