As doors opened for the first day of school last Tuesday, fewer than 700 students walked into Merivale High School’s halls, a dip from the more than 1,200 enrolled a few years ago. That’s some 500 fewer students to fight over music stands at early morning practices and wiggle out jazz hands in musicals, but the school’s arts program has not suffered. Instead, as the visual and performing arts departments build on a strong reputation with award after award, teachers, students and parents wonder whether their unofficial status as a vibrant arts school may be one way to bolster declining registration.
