Heavy black smoke damages Kanata home

OTTAWA — Firefighters responded to reports of heavy black smoke at a two-storey Kanata home Sunday noon. Two residents evacuated the home and will be displaced Sunday night. One of the residents was a male who was treated for smoke inhalation. The smoke caused $150,000 in building damage to the single home at 8 Forbes Ave. and an additional $75,000 in damage to the contents. Firefighters responded to the call at 11:50 a.m. and declared the building under control at 12:35 p.m. The cause was possibly linked to the furnace, but firefighters continue to investigate.
