OTTAWA — A Chinatown church can expand onto two residential lots behind its current Lebreton Street property, city council’s planning committee decided Tuesday, despite objections from neighbours who say its planned hall and gym is too tall and too big for the area. The Chinese Alliance Church’s new second building is to back onto Bell Street, tucked between two other houses, with only an emergency exit and a wall replacing the dwellings that are there now. The church needs the room, plus 25 new underground parking spaces, to expand the work it does with charities like Rideauwood Addiction and Family Services and government bodies like the Canada Revenue Agency, for which the church hosts tax clinics.
