OTTAWA — Police officers deserve the same Charter protection as any other citizen when it comes to giving testimony in court that could later be used to incriminate them, a defence lawyer for Ottawa police Sgt. Steven Desjourdy argued Tuesday in the officer’s sexual assault trial. Desjourdy was compelled to testify in the criminal trial of the woman whose shirt and bra he is now accused of cutting off in the cellblock, argued lawyer Vince Clifford. As such, a Crown prosecutor can’t be allowed to cross examine him on his previous testimony should Desjourdy now choose to testify in his own defence.
