Ottawa research team gets $7.4M from Terry Fox Foundation

OTTAWA — Two research teams fighting different cancers in novel ways were awarded $13.4 million Thursday from The Terry Fox Foundation. The announcement, made at the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre, awarded $7.4 million over five years to Dr. John Bell of Ottawa and his multi-disciplinary team in other cities as they look to conduct research into oncolytic viruses (viruses that target cancer cells and leave healthy ones unharmed). And Dr. Keith Humphries from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and his team received $5.8 million over five years to explore why acute forms of leukemia are difficult to treat.
