Steering fails on city’s 22 new garbage trucks

Twenty-two trucks the city bought to pick up both garbage and recycling in the same run had to be sent back to their manufacturer after the power steering failed in tests, says the city’s general manager of public works. The $270,000 Freightliner trucks with twin side-by-side containers in the back passed early inspections. But when they hit the road with test loads, their drivers started to find that they couldn’t turn left, O’Keefe said.
