OTTAWA — Parliament needs a “fair play rule” to protect its own brand and the rights and reputations of Canadians who feel maligned or abused by MPs exercising their sweeping powers of privilege, says the former lawyer for the House of Commons. Rob Walsh, who retired earlier this year as the Commons’ top legal counsel, said it is time MPs “wake up and smell the coffee” and take steps to ensure people are treated fairly in their proceedings before the courts step in and do it for them.
