English pushing French aside in Ottawa, census finds

English is increasingly crowding out French as the language spoken in Ottawa, and is even making inroads in francophone Gatineau, according to the 2011 census. But by far the fastest growing population in the National Capital region are those who are multilingual. While about two-thirds of Ottawa residents claim English as their mother tongue — essentially unchanged from the 2006 census — the percentage of residents whose mother tongue is French dropped from nearly 15 per cent in 2006 to 14.2 per cent last year.
