OTTAWA — Several Ottawa-area communities are jockeying for inclusion into ridings of choice as the federal electoral boundaries commission redraws the nation’s electoral map. In response to demographic shifts and population growth, the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission will add 30 new ridings across the country, bringing the number of seats in the House of Commons to 338 from the current 308. Fifteen of the new seats will be in Ontario, and a panel headed by Justice George Valin is holding hearings across the province to decide how to redraw the new boundaries. The commission’s plan will see the creation of the new riding of Nepean in west-end Ottawa, but several other area ridings will have their boundaries redrawn or will be renamed.
