Ottawa needs more skate parks, city says

OTTAWA — Ottawa needs more skateboard and BMX parks, especially downtown and close to transit, the city’s parks department says, and it’ll look for more chances to build them. The city has 18 of them in all, but “these parks were developed over the last two decades without established standards and therefore vary significantly in terms of construction approach, size, types of ramps and equipment and amenities,” says a report bound for city council’s community and protective services committee. Skateboarders got together in 2011, after designers built a crummy new one in Barrhaven, and started demanding better. The parks department says they’re right.
