JOB DESCRIPTION:
POSITION: Communications and Outreach Coordinator
EMPLOYER: Ottawa Chinese Community Service Centre (OCCSC)
DESCRIPTION
The Communications and Outreach Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the OCCSC’s outreach and promotion of the agency programs and services to the Chinese, immigrant, and wider communities and providing strategic communications advice to the agency.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, contributing to a social awareness of the OCCSC by contributing to media programming; liaising with various media outlets; coordinating, implementing and managing the agency social media strategies; liaising with local International Student bodies; hosting events; conducting workshops, drafting media releases; drafting articles for publication such as the OCCSC newsletter; networking with government institutions, universities, sector partners; and being aware of federal, provincial and municipal policies and initiatives affecting immigrants and organizations committed to advancing their full social and economic integration into Canadian society.
RESPONSIBLITIES
Media
· Coordinate OCCSC’s communications strategies and assist with the creation of a greater public awareness of the agency’s programs and services;
· Coordinate, implement and manage the OCCSC’s social media strategies;
· Outreach to the Chinese, immigrant, university, and wider communities;
· Liaise with other Ottawa based settlement agencies, government institutions, educational facilities, community centres, airport authorities, cultural communities and media to promote OCCSC programs and services and recruit potential clients;
· Maintain media files on immigrant issues, immigration policies, settlement programs and services, and advise the Executive Director accordingly;
· Responsible for the publication of the OCCSC monthly newsletter such as writing feature articles, information gathering, editing, and translating into Chinese;
· Writing a weekly Chinese newspaper column highlighting the programs and services of the OCCSC and immigrant success stories;
· Producing and moderating weekly community Chinese radio and or television programming such as on CHIN Radio FM 97.9; Rogers Community Programs, university radio stations CKCU, CHUO, and providing media releases.
International Students
· OCCSC liaison with International students in the local universities, colleges and high schools. Provide necessary services and maintain good working relationships and cooperation with the international student offices in each school;
· OCCSC representative coordinating with the Catholic Centre for Immigration and Axiom Consulting with respect to completing the International Student project which launched in 2012;
· Responsible for organizing focus group interviews, group workshops, social activities, etc., with international students;
· Provide required information, statistics and feedback for potential International Student funding proposals;
· Responsible for the collection of workshop, classroom and info-session schedules, special events programs, etc., for student awareness and media distribution;
· Assisting management team with the organizing and promotion of outreach and special events;
· Acting as agency photographer/videographer;
· Document translation between English and Chinese languages, interpretation services as required.
· Any duties as assigned by the Ex. Director;
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
· Undergraduate degree in Communications or Journalism, plus at least 2 years related experience, and/or equivalent combination of training and experience;
· Excellent communications skills in English and Chinese;
· Comprehensive knowledge of programs and services provided by settlement agencies;
· Experience in writing, reporting, and hosting media programs;
· Excellent networking skills and media contacts;
· Understanding of the Chinese and immigrant communities and current issues, trends, successes, gaps, and challenges;
· Ability to lead workshops and provide information in a clear, concise, fashion;
· Ability to work independently with initiative and also as a team player;
· Strong organizational and interpersonal skills;
· Working knowledge of office software applications;
· Ability to work flexible hours.
· International student experience considered an asset
· Knowledge of the federal government immigration policies for international students, student visas, on-off campus work permits, post-graduate work permits and work visas, etc.
· Knowledge of Canadian university’s and college’s policies on international students; i.e., entrance exams, health insurance, residency requirements, tuition fees, etc.
· Knowledge of campus activities, clubs, etc. that would be of interest to international students.
· Knowledge and/or experience of student body organizations (i.e., Chinese Student Associations in the local universities and colleges will be considered an asset.
RATIONALE
OCCSC is a key immigrant services provider in Ottawa and there is an on-going bridging need to communicate and build awareness of the agency’s programs and services within the Chinese and
immigrant communities utilizing a variety of media strategies including the agency website, internet, social media, print, video, radio and television programming. The Communications and Outreach Coordinator will also build upon networks with other newcomer service providers, sector and partner
agencies, government, educational institutions, international students, business associations, employers, healthcare providers, community centres, sports and recreation facilities, etc. to promote awareness of our programs and services and to better inform and assist newcomers, immigrants and international students in Ottawa.
