When Ottawa was small and smaller-minded, our portal to China was laundries and chop suey, its ambassadors being small men in red vests speaking broken English and moving egg rolls, pencils tucked behind an ear. The Lucky Key, Canton Inn, Cathay House, Golden Palace, the Ho Ho restaurants, the Yick Lung and Wing On groceries. Not much of a portrait, really; more a caricature of a serving class.
