Mother pleads for treatment, not prison for son who raped 14-year-old girl

OTTAWA — The mother of a high-risk but mentally ill sex offender who raped a 14-year-old girl in a city park pleaded with a judge Monday not to send her son to federal prison but for treatment instead. “He needs to be in a place where he is improving and not just being warehoused,” Penny Sherwood said of her son, James Sherwood. “He could come out in a better place and society will benefit from it too.”
