OTTAWA — As Hélène Campbell was wheeled into a Toronto operating room last April to undergo a double-lung transplant, she understood the procedure had only two possible outcomes: She would either be able to breathe on her own again, without respirators or oxygen, or she would die. The last thing she said to her mother was that, either way, she knew she would come out of it in a better place. The sentiment was certainly in keeping with the cheeriness the then-20-year-old had exhibited during the months since she’d launched her organ-donation awareness campaign. It was also consistent with her upbringing in a Christian home where her values were very much shaped by a belief in God and the stories told in the Bible.
