Air Canada pilots mad at seniority ruling

Last Updated Mon, 16 Jun 2003 19:19:38
TORONTO - Air Canada pilots say they are furious at an arbitrator's ruling that gives former Canadian pilots "windfall gains" at the expense of the national carrier's pilots.

"The lasting impact on the careers and the finances of the Air Canada pilots will be devastating," David Coles, the pilot who heads the merger committee of the Air Canada Pilots Association (ACPA), said in a statement.

Arbitrator Brian Keller released a ruling Monday that dramatically changes the seniority list list created in 2000 when the airlines merged after Air Canada bought Canadian.

Coles said the ACPA will approach the Canada Industrial Relations Board with its concerns about the ruling. It claims Keller gave the Canadian pilots "windfall gains."

There are 3,443 pilots at Air Canada, including 1,104 from Canadian.

The ACPA was the last of Air Canada's unions to negotiate a cutback deal with the airline. Air Canada, which is in bankruptcy protection, needs all its unions to approve their individual deals for any of them to take effect.

Without the deals, it may go bankrupt.

The ACPA said the pilots will soon begin voting on the agreement.
