I live smack dab in the downtown core...and I want to be able to go fishin on any given day, before or after work...(or during one of my 4 hour lunches)...of course there's nothing better than getting up at 4:00 am packing Bobber's boat and driving for an hour to some of the hotter spots...but realistically I can't do that everyday...
lately I see people walking around DOWNTOWN with a fishing pole sticking out of their backpack....and I start to wonder I've fished at rockland...and I've fished on the Rideau River plenty of times but always an at least a 45min drive from downtown....this season my goal is to find and map out all spots in the downtown where I can walk in with my chest waiters (without having raw sewage eat through them) and hook into something other than sunfish...
If anyone knows of a good spot to get me started that would be much appreciated! ...happy fishing!

There was an article on Ottawa and people fishing last year in one of the outdoor mags..See if I can find it..They talked about people on lunch hooking pike and largemouth on a regular basis in the Rideau and other down town spots.

The entire downtown section of the Rideau is good for fishing. Muskies as well as bass and pike/walleye are caught daily.
I know a guy who fishes there so much he knows the fish by name.

Strathcona park - section near the pool at Mann and Range
- lots of bass and pike. Musky too. Once caught 4 4lb smallmouth in one hour there.
Brantwood park - Clegg off Main.
good for pike or musky depending. Some smallies.
Kingswood park is ok. best time i had was in the fall however there are some nice weekbeds there. Dog heaven so you may have vistiting sniffers while you skulk in the shore brush.

I agree with Strathcona park, it has a pile of smallmouths. There is also the locks behind the Capital hill, it has a blanket of emerald shiners on the surface and tons of fish underneath, bass, pike walleye, eels, catfish and also smallish carp.
Rideau falls, tons of huge carp with some pike walleyes and bass (for once the season opens).
One spot that is very fun is on the strip, halfway between the locks of capital hill and the dam heading west (Victoria Island I think). There is a water discharge that holds alot of carp, big carp. If the discharge is on the light side, fishing is easier because you don't need extra weight. There might be other fish there but I only fish carp at this spot.

Nice to see your alive David (ooops, I mean Atk).
I would be happy to sneak away for an hour at lunch and show you where I go fishing ( 5 minutes from Slater and O'Connor). I put a rod in the car and every now and then I disappear for an hour, fish for a bit, and come back and nobody even knows I left. It's great - clears the head, wets the line and I am not the only shirt and tie sneaking a fish at lunchtime...
Send me a message and I will get back to you. This week is not great, however, as I am buried at work (too much sneaking away I guess)

If you can remember where the Food Shacks are placed on the Canal for Winterlude, they sit on Gravel built up berms alongside the edge of the Canal Walls near deeper water. One site which I have heard of many Good Walleye being caught and just at the Entrance to Dows Lake by the Bronson Bridge on Carleton University side where the Shacks were . Cast out , let line go down and bring backup the edge of the Gravel and you should find GOOD WALLEYE. And what habitat do walleye like? Seems someone at NCC back in those days screwed up in this case, actually doing good for someone besides the dogooders.

Hogs Back Falls and downstream offered some fantastic fishing last year if you know when/where and what to use. Last season I had my share of nice walleye, smallies and a muskie. I've also seen some large carp and redhorse suckers in the large pool, though I wasn't fishing for them last year. Might try my luck with them this season as well.
Once the water levels go down you can wade from the eastern bank.

I agree that the urban fishing is picking up. I stood in the rain for an hour Saturday evening @ Hogs Back (below the falls) and was rewarded with a nice 20" walleye. Looking forward to many more before bass season opens!

Rich,
I was using a 1/4oz jig and rainbow fleck power minnow. Unfortunetely with all the rain the water level have risen 2' from the other day making Hogs Back pretty much unfishable below the falls. Once the water drops again, try about 50 yards downstream on the west bank where the current eases up a liltle.
Cheers

Rich,
I also hit Blacks Rapids today just to see how things were. The weed growth is just starting to come back. I'd say maybe 2 or 3 weeks before the water drops somewhat and the baitfish show up in quantity. The base of the lower lock is a good spot to throw your husky jerk for eyes. I caught a number of them last year on wally divers.
You can also take your chances from shore beside the spillway. I usually throw a shallow runner there to avoid hanging up on the bottom. The rocky point opposite the dock isn't bad for pike as well.

I to saw an article last year in the Ontario out of doors with a guy holding a nice brown trout and the parlement buildings in the back ground. I cant find the magazine but would love to try browns right there in Ottawa. Anyone else see the article or anyone ever fish them there please give me some info. Thanks.

Well not having seen the article, from your description I would guess that they were fishing around the island accessible by car on the Champlain Bridge. I personally haven't fished that location but I do know that the water levels get pretty low (and subsequently warm) over the summer. Probably best to try for Browns now.

There is Brown trout in the Ottawa but most anglers who fish for them keep to them selves. I had hooked one a year ago in the rapids on a small white jig and grub and the fish rubbed a rock and got off. Lot off guys for for the on the fly and you can see them wading the rapids. not sure what fly pattern to use but from a spinning standpoint you can try little cleos, cast masters and jigs.. good luck!!

Thanks for the info guys. I might just have to try some browns there soon. I'v never caught a natural brown before in Canada, caught 2 small ones in Lake Placid NY.

I'm not sure if these browns in the Ottawa are native - I'm pretty sure they stocked the river. I've never caught one in Ontario before, but as a kid growing up in St. John's we had an abundance of spots to catch brown trout...mostly because they had displaced all the speckled trout. I don't know how things stand now, but a river that flows through the heart of St. John's, Rennie's River, was estimated to have a concentration of brown trout that was twice any other river on the planet. The next contender was somewhere in Chile.
And nobody fishes for them, or at least no one used to. Back in those days you kept every trout you caught so keeping fish from the Rennie's was not palatable.
Oh - I see it is 8:20 - that means it is time for me to go to the garage and load up the Quantum with 20 lb Fireline...in anticipation of those 43 inch pike.

Well the continued high water and recent cold front have continued to frustrate myself and I'm sure many others who frequent stretches of the Rideau from Black's Rapids and downstream.
With any luck the dry weather last long enough to let the water levels drop back down to a normal level, to where us urban anglers can once again take advantage of the great local fishing!

FYI, it appears as though the City of Ottawa has commisioned a survery of the angling usaged for the Rideau (Long Island Locks to Rideau Falls). The person hired to conduct the surveys indicated that they would be working all season, so don't be surprised to encounter someone other than the conservation authority approaching you.

I'm not sure if this would be considered "Urban", certainly not Urban Ottawa, but if you are looking for a nice place to take a few casts, downtown Arnprior seems quite popular with many people casting into the Madawaska and catching catfish and probably a mixed bag of walleye, pike, smallmouth and muskies. I have a picture I meant to add to this post - will try to get to it tomorrow night.

Take Fish-Hawks advice and try this out... if you're down by the boat launch, the one near the bridge, just before the sun comes up in the morning (not dark around 5:15 am this time of year), you'll most likely see a big pike or muskie right up against the dock... I've seen one there once that looked to be about 4 feet long!
This has happened to me almost everytime I've fished off the dock at this hour in the morning... (a big pike or muskie cruises in, once one went for a buzzbait I was cranking, but that's another story)
If anyone catches one of these monsters please let me know!

A four foot muskie or pike you say???? Verrry interesting. ONe look at the fish finder on the way out to the Ottawa River shows a bottom structure that is packed with hiding places for big fish. I'm not sure why I never try there - lots of other boats do.

Hey, that sort of rhymes.

Hi Todd,
Just wondering what bait or lure you were using while fishing Hogs Back.
Thanks,
Rich

Rich,
I was using a 1/4oz jig and rainbow fleck power minnow.
