Chelsea council votes to oppose new Quebec language law

Chelsea council has added its voice to the chorus of opposition to Quebec’s controversial new language law, voting unanimously Monday night to oppose the Parti Québécois’ Bill 14. The controversial bill, which among many amendments to the language laws in Quebec, allows the provincial government to strip any municipality of its bilingual status if the percentage of anglophones falls below 50 per cent. The 2011 census listed 46 per cent of Chelsea’s population as English-speaking.
