In Summary

  • Of the 28 countries that planted genetically modified crops last year, 20 were developing and eight industrial countries, compared to 19 developing and 10 industrial countries in 2011.
  • The report indicated that developing nations planted 52 per cent of the crops in 2012, up from 50 per cent a year earlier and above the 48 per cent industrial countries grew last yea

“Adoption of biotech crops in developing countries has built up steadily over the years, surpassing industrial countries in 2012, a milestone once thought impossible by some,” author of the annual report, who is also the chairperson and founder of ISAAA, Clive James said.

Although the report says the increased acreage has improved food security and significantly reduced poverty in some of the world’s most vulnerable regions, Kenya has banned importation of genetically modified crops following a study that linked them to cancer.
