OTTAWA — Nine local health agencies were to announce Monday that they are opposed to the expansion of gambling in Ottawa, and are asking city council to improve public consultation on the issue. Ottawa council voted last fall to put the city’s name in the running to host a new casino, less than three weeks after the idea was first presented by Mayor Jim Watson. There are already slot machines at the Rideau Carleton Raceway, but the addition of more machines there or in a new location is being proposed under an expansion program led by Ontario Lottery and Gaming, the provincial agency responsible for gambling.
