About 80 members of Ottawa’s Polish community were on Parliament Hill Saturday to remember one of the worst massacres of World War II. Over 25,000 people were murdered in Poland’s Katyn forest outside Smolensk in April of 1940 after an order given in March of the same year by the Soviet Politburo, to kill thousands of prisoners-of-war and leaders of the Polish society, after the 1939 Soviet invasion of Poland.
In 2010, 96 people were killed, including more than a dozen Polish officials, in a plane crash near Smolensk as they arrived to take part in a 75th anniversary memorial service for the Katyn massacre. Canada officially recognizes April 13th as the Katyn Memorial Day.
