7日中午，23岁的枪手John Zawahri全身黑衣手执半自动步枪，开枪射杀至少4人，打伤数人后，被警方击毙。
这次枪击事件开始是一次家庭暴力事件，死者是枪手的父亲与兄弟。之后他点燃了自家的房屋。
随着这栋房屋陷入火海，男子劫持了一辆汽车，在前往圣莫尼卡学院校园途中打伤一名妇女。警方称，这名男子向一辆城市巴士、一辆警车与其他多辆汽车以及路人开枪。
正准备离开校园停车场的一名SUV司机被射杀，车上一名乘客受伤。
男子闯进校园后，在前往图书馆途中，将一名妇女打成重伤，后来在医院不治身亡。
枪手随后在圣莫尼卡学院图书馆向人群开枪，被赶来的警察当场击毙。
有目击者称看到了第二名嫌犯。在击毙枪手后，警察封锁了校园，并展开了大规模的搜捕活动。警方7日晚在新闻发布会上说，对第二名疑似嫌疑人进行审问后释放，认定他不是犯罪嫌疑人。
