Pet care: Practical treatments for kidney disease are limited

Question: My nine-year-old Basenji was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease a month ago. We have been administering subcutaneous fluids twice a week along with his medications. There are some days when he has as much energy as a puppy and there are others when all he does is sleep all day. His appetite is up and down as well. Our veterinarian told us that his condition is irreversible and that the best we can hope for is to slow down the progression of the disease and maintain his quality of life. Are there any other treatment alternatives that my veterinarian and I should be considering?
