Ottawa has been named the host city for the 2013 International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Duathlon Championships with weekend festivities starting Thursday, August 8 and culminating with race day on Saturday, August 10. Ottawa will welcome 1,000 athletes and many visitors from around the world for this exciting event.
The Duathlon is the sister sport to the triathlon, whereby competitors start the course running 10 km then change to cycling for 40 km, and then back to running 5 km to finish the race. This non-Olympic sport has held World Championships since 1990, and attracts athletes from such nations as Britain, Spain, Russia, Australia and the U.S.
“We are pleased and proud to be the host city for this international sporting event and we welcome competitors from around the globe to Ottawa,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “This is another result of our bid more, win more, host more strategy to attract events, showcase our city, and support our local businesses.”
Ottawa presents a world-class course that starts at the Canadian War Museum and travels along the Sir John A Macdonald Parkway with spectacular views of the Ottawa River, Parliament Hill and downtown.
"A lot of eyes will be on Ottawa when it opens its doors to the ITU Duathlon World Championships this summer. We are pleased to welcome all distinguished guests and 1,000 international athletes competing on the one-of-a-kind World Championship course,” said Norm O’Reilly, Race Chair, University of Ottawa Professor, and Senior Advisor, Consulting Group at TrojanOne. “Excitement is building among those eager to participate in the open duathlon course and the Sens Shuffle 5 km open run.”
The weekend events for the athletes include opening and closing ceremonies with award presentations and a runner’s expo. The race day features the world’s best men and women’s U23, Paraduathlon, Age Group Championships. Race day will also include the added feature of an open 5-km run for all interested local enthusiasts, that will support the Sens Foundation efforts to improve recreation opportunities in the City of Ottawa.
“We’re extremely pleased to be the supported charity of the ITU Duathlon World Championships,” said Danielle Robinson, President, Sens Foundation. “With the Sens Shuffle we hope to raise awareness and funds for the more than one in five children in our community who live in poverty and lack access to social recreation and educational programs and facilities.”
