Engineers answer call to rebuild Iraq
By Margaret Quan
EE Times, May 12, 2003 (10:12 a.m. ET)
Excerpts:
Manhasset, N.Y. - More than 5,000 engineers worldwide
have answered the call to rebuild Iraq, posting
resumes and filling out profiles on the EPCjobs.com
Web site in hopes of landing an assignment with one of
the infrastructure projects planned for the war-torn
nation.
London-based engineering- and construction-staffing
firm EPCglobal posted the online call two weeks ago
"to mobilize engineering and construction
professionals to join the recovery operation" in Iraq.
Among those who registered were engineers from the
United States, the United Kingdom, India, Asia and
Eastern Europe.
...
Details still hazy
But how many engineering jobs the process will
generate, which skills and engineering disciplines
will be in highest demand, and when the jobs will
start are open questions.
Indeed, there are no guarantees that applicants who
post resumes to EPCglobal will win jobs with Bechtel
or with other contractors.
Richard Hoare, managing director and deputy chief
executive of EPCglobal's U.S. operations, said the
firm is making no promises but is placing registrants'
profiles into "job buckets," categorized by expertise
and relevant qualifications, to ease the process of
matching candidates to clients when staffing requests
come in.
Engineers want jobs restoring Iraq's power generation,
water and telecom systems-as part of an effort that
could require five years and $60 billion.
Engineers with specific experience in
large-infrastructure projects, special-language skills
or experience in working in remote areas may be the
first picked for the Iraq openings. But EEs who are
interested in working in Iraq "have a lot of skills
that can transfer to telecom, industrial control or
electrical-power projects," Hoare said.
