Back when Howard “Rip” Riopelle played for the Montreal Canadiens, between 1947 and 1950, the typical National Hockey League salary nothing like today’s average of more than $2 million per season. More like somewhere between $3,500 and $5,000. So Howard Riopelle opened a fabric store in Ottawa, his hometown. Montreal was where fabric manufacturers were concentrated, so the Canadiens left-winger would use his free time to check out product for Riopelle Fabric Centre.
