Putty or Silicone Under Strainer Basket?
Author: keithailor (AL)
I have to install 3 sinks in my rental, 2 bath and 1 kitchen. Which product should I use underneath the strainer basket, plumbers putty or silicone (if silicone, which type and name brand)? Thanks in advance, Keith.

Oh, one other thing...are all tail pieces, whether metal or any colored plastic, 1-1/4"?

Some are 1-1/2 too but mostly 1-1/4 and can be threaded at one end or both if you are using tubular brass.

Best Wishes

I use plumbers putty under a basket strainer. All the tailpieces I've ever used with a basket strainer have been 1 1/2".

Use putty.....If you ever have to take it apart again, you'll be glad you didn't use silicone.

silicone is what i use.
brand doesn't matter as long as it is 100% silicone.
kitchen tailpieces are 1 1/2".
bathroom tailpieces are 1 1/4".

I'm with Packy on the silicone thing. Silicone will never leak, even if you don't have the nut super tight and I've never had a hard time getting ANY siliconed basket strainer back out.

If the parts are clean when assembled with silicone, you'll have to destroy the part to get it out.If it was my RENTAL unit,I'd use putty. That's just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions.

Paul48, the only time i have ever had to remove a kitchen strainer was when it was leaking.
(actually i've removed a few because the customer wanted a disposer installed)
the leak will corrode the nut holding the strainer in place and it must be chopped out.
yeah, it is a bit of a struggle to remove a strainer installed with silicone. but, given the leak rate between silicone and putty, in my opinion silicone is preferable. ( i too know what they say about opinions)
since using silicone i have NEVER had a leak. this includes the plastic pop-up wastes for lavs and the plastic shower drain assembly
