Ottawa - Three local writers were presented with the prestigious Ottawa Book Award and Prix du livre d’Ottawa tonight at the Shenkman Arts Centre.
The winning authors were awarded a prize of $7,500. This year, awards were given to books in the categories of English fiction and non-fiction (Ottawa Book Award), and French fiction (Prix du livre). Due to an insufficient number of entries, there was no award in the category of French non-fiction.
“Tonight we recognize the immense literary talent that exists in Ottawa,” said Deputy Mayor, Steve Desroches. “We have a very rich history in arts and culture in Ottawa and we are lucky to have many talented authors contribute to the cultural history in our community.”
Councillor Mark Taylor, Chair of Community and Protective Services also praised the well-deserved award recipients. “Each of these writers demonstrates a unique ability to captivate our hearts and minds. Their gift for writing is a gift to us as readers.”
The following authors are recipients of the 2013 Ottawa Book Award and Prix du livre d’Ottawa:

Winning books were selected by a jury of peers:
Of the English fiction winner, the jury praised Missy Marston’s first novel: “...a literary romp and a riveting tale that fights tough in the corners. Marston's characters stick with the reader and her audacious turn of phrase wizardry lingers on the page. […] A modern fairy tale and a zoned-out fantasy in one satisfying confection.”
Of the English non-fiction winner, the jury wrote of Michael Petrou’s compelling series of narratives “...aharrowing journey into the heart of darkness of post-9/11 Afghanistan. [...] Head, heart and spirit blend powerfully in a chronicle of a stranger in an alien land seething with ancient and modern loyalties and hatreds.”
Of the French fiction winner, the jury wrote: “Deeply moving and invigorating, this novel by Marie-Josée Martin touches the heart. Her clean and clear writing style, full of life, offers the story of happiness that is both harsh and full.”
