Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson emphasized the importance of having a sound transportation system for economic growth and stressed the City’s commitment to supporting Ottawa’s business community at the 2nd Annual Economic Outlook luncheon today. Presented by the Ottawa Business Journal and the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Outlook event provides insight to Ottawa’s business leaders and innovation community.

“We are building a 21st century transportation system worthy of a G8 capital because our future economic success depends on it,” said Mayor Watson. “We want to make sure Ottawa remains the best place to visit, raise a family, and start or grow a business.”

The Mayor went on to outline a number of achievements and plans for the city’s business community, including:

  • Securing a $15M-funding agreement from the Province of Ontario for an innovation complex that will act as a “one-stop shop” for Ottawa’s entrepreneurs
  • The development of two extensive Community Improvement Plans (CIPs)
    • An urban revitalization plan for a portion of Carling Avenue and
    • An employment-focused plan for Orléans that will help support economic development in Ottawa
  • The success of Invest Ottawa, which facilitated 654 new jobs, attracted $25 million in foreign investment and $26 million in investment for portfolio companies in the first two quarters of 2013
  • The Capital Investment Track (CIT) program, which guides priority investments through the City’s requirements in a timely manner, has been successful in facilitating economic development.
    • Claridge was this program’s first client and the City delivered timely and customer-sensitive service.
    • The CIT program is helping to ensure that the company can meet its construction deadlines and open its doors in 2015.
    • Approximately 80,000 labour hours in the construction sector and 100 permanent jobs in the hospitality sector will have been created
  • The signing of an “exchange and cooperation” agreement with Ottawa’s sister-city, Beijing during the city’s largest-ever mission to China.
    • Building on our existing relationship and connections, this agreement establishes key common goals in business, trade, investment, culture, education, tourism and municipal administration

A panel of industry leaders was also on hand to discuss the economic climate in Ottawa and what opportunities lay ahead in the future.
