Ottawa – Lansdowne’s stadium saw an exciting milestone today as construction of the Veil began. The Veil is a wooden curtain that surrounds the south side stands and will be a landmark along the Rideau Canal when complete.
“The work that has commenced today is the realization of an exciting and innovative new vision for the stadium at Lansdowne,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “When complete, the Veil will be an eye-catching new attraction along the Rideau Canal and Bank Street for residents and visitors alike.”
The Veil and stadium design were created by Cannon Design on the premise of re-imagining a stadium in the park. The design, materials and shape of the Veil acknowledges the stadium’s strong connection to the green spaces surrounding it, including the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the 18-acre urban park currently under construction at Lansdowne.
The structure is made up of 24 curving wooden spines and over 1,800 wooden ribs, or purlins. It will take about five months to assemble and complete this aspect of the new south side stands with construction of the Veil element expected to be finished in late February 2014.
When complete the stadium will be home to a new Canadian Football League (CFL) team and a North American Soccer League (NASL) team, as well as countless concerts and other major events.
The redevelopment of Lansdowne will transform the 38-acre site into a gathering place for sports and entertainment and feature an urban village, connecting neighbourhoods and the Rideau Canal, and an 18-acre urban park. The overall project will enhance the long-term sustainability and community enjoyment of this important local heritage site.
