Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson, Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Michael Coteau and Councillor Mark Taylor, Chair of the Community and Protective Services Committee will be joining local leaders in the immigrant-serving community to discuss local priorities for immigrant integration, the City’s Municipal Immigration Strategy and Immigration Portal.

As part of its Term of Council Priorities, City Council included priorities related to promoting successful immigrant integration outcomes in Ottawa. As part of its priorities, Council approved the creation of a City of Ottawa Municipal Immigration Strategy. The strategy seeks to coordinate municipal efforts to attract immigrants and to provide the necessary supports to enable newcomers to successfully integrate with a sense of belonging to Ottawa. It introduces a variety of actions focused on the goals of to attracting, integrating and retaining skilled immigrants to the city.
In 2012, Ottawa received more than 12,000 new immigrants, including permanent residents, international students, temporary foreign workers and refugees.
