Ottawa – The City of Ottawa would like to remind everyone that a visit from firefighters or paramedics is no treat, and injuring yourself is not a trick anyone wants to see. Please have a safe and happy Halloween by keeping these simple safety tips in mind.
On the street
- The best costumes are light coloured or bright and reflective.
- Keep costumes short to avoid tripping and falling.
- Wearing a mask impedes vision, so use face paint instead.
- Don’t let children trick-or-treat alone—have adult supervision at all times.
- Motorists need to be extra vigilant when driving on Halloween night.
In the house
- Leave sharp carving tools for adults—get kids to decorate their pumpkins with paint
- Small battery-powered lights are the safest for use in jack-o’-lanterns. If you use a candle, try a tea light or votive candle in a non-combustible holder.
- Place candlelit jack-o’-lanterns on sturdy surfaces, away from anything that can burn such as curtains, costumes and other decorations.
- Never leave a lit candle unattended.
In case of emergency
- Make sure that children know how to call 9-1-1 or their local emergency number if they experience an emergency.
- Teach children to STOP, DROP and ROLL should their clothing catch fire.
