Consumer Reports' most reliable cars of 2014
October 30, 2013 8:52 AM

Consumer Reports released its annual vehicle reliability survey Oct. 28. Automakers from Ford to Toyota play close attention to how reliable their new cars are deemed because the results are highly visible to car shoppers and can be used in marketing campaigns to help sway prospective car buyers.

For years, Japanese brands including Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Mazda and Infiniti have dominated the rankings. And while they still comprise a large number of vehicles on the list, those brands are ceding some dominance to Volkswagen's luxury Audi brand and several General Motors brands, led by Buick and GMC. Though the Detroit-based automaker only has two individual cars that rank among the top three in their class, every single one of its cars scored average or better. Volvo cars have also made big strides in the annual survey.

“A lot of people do buy these vehicles just banking on their quality — I’m going to go buy a Honda or a Toyota because I know it’s going to be reliable,” Jake Fisher, director of auto testing at Consumer Reports, said in an interview with Bloomberg News. “Some of our data is showing that’s not the case.”

In fact, Nissan plummeted in the rankings to 22nd among the 28 brands surveyed. But that still proved better than Ford and Lincoln -- they finished behind every brand but Mini. Chrysler's four major brands all fell between 18th and 24th.

The results are Consumer Reports' prediction of the reliability of 2014 model-year cars and trucks based on a survey of readers who own 1.1 million vehicles from the 2011 through 2013 model years. See which cars were most reliable in the 18 different classes.

*****************
Toyota Motor Corp.’s reputation for quality took a hit on Monday when influential magazine Consumer Reports pulled its recommendation on three of the Japanese auto maker’s vehicles, including its popular flagship Camry sedan, due to poor crash test results.
While Toyota’s luxury Lexus and namesake brands were ranked most reliable in the U.S. auto industry in Consumer Reports’ annual new-car reliability survey, the magazine said it will no longer recommend the Camry, Prius v model or RAV4 sport utility vehicle because they received “poor” ratings in a crash test started last year by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
*****************

*******************
For more than a decade Japanese brands have had a lock on most of the top spots on the list, though this year Korean, American and European companies managed to crack the top ten.
*******************

*******************
The report is based on data from 1.1 million 2004-13 model-year vehicles leased or owned by Consumer Reports subscribers. Subscribers were asked whether, in the last year, they had a serious problem with their vehicle that required a visit to the dealer.
*******************
