Ottawa - The City facility located at 100 Constellation Crescent was officially named Mary Pitt Centre today at a commemorative naming ceremony hosted by Mayor Jim Watson.

Mary Pitt is a lifelong community leader who served as the last Mayor, from 1997 to 2000, and the only female Mayor of the former City of Nepean. Since the end of her term as Mayor she has worked with several local organizations such as the Queensway-Carleton Hospital’s Foundation, the Ottawa Convention Centre, Villa Marconi Long-Term Care Centre, the Nepean Museum and the Nepean Chamber of Commerce.

“Many times, politicians will finish their terms in political office and fade away from public service. But, that’s not the case with Mary Pitt,” said Mayor Watson. “She continues to stay deeply involved in our community and I want to thank Mary for her incredible dedication to our city throughout her lifetime.”

Mary Pitt Centre is home to several City departments and the municipal Provincial Offences Court. It is next door to the former Nepean City Hall, now known as Ben Franklin Place, named after the late Nepean Mayor for whom Mrs. Pitt worked for several years as a senior aide.

College Ward Councillor Rick Chiarelli served on Nepean City Council while Mrs. Pitt was in office.

“She worked tirelessly to strengthen Nepean as both a place of business and a wonderful place to live and raise a family,” said Councillor Chiarelli. “Her dedication to our community here in Nepean – and the entire City of Ottawa – is to be commended.”

As a result of the naming, the plaza and the fountain in Centrepointe Park, which were already named after Mary Pitt, will now be called Nepean Heritage Walk.

The naming of Mary Pitt Centre was established through the City of Ottawa’s Commemorative Naming Policy. For more information on commemorative naming go to ottawa.ca.
