Ottawa - The City of Ottawa received a silver-level designation as a walk-friendly city by WALK Friendly Ontario – which is a recognition program that encourages municipalities to create and improve spaces and places to walk.

This silver-level designation is the highest level awarded so far by the program – with only Ottawa and Hamilton receiving those honours.

“The City of Ottawa and my Council colleagues are proud and honoured to receive this distinction," said Mayor Jim Watson."We are continuously working to provide residents and visitors to Ottawa with better options to get around the city, including new street designs and multi-use pathways that are safer, more convenient and more comfortable for our pedestrians.”

“This honour comes on the heels of our bike-friendly designation in August and when we are finalizing the renewed version of the Ottawa Pedestrian Plan,” said Councillor Keith Egli, Chair of the City’s Transportation Committee. “The plan will further build on our achievements by providing direction on how Ottawa can continue to become a more pedestrian-friendly, liveable and healthy city.”

“This recognition will help to grow Ottawa as walk-friendly city, which will build vibrant communities and contribute to the overall health and well-being of our residents,” said Councillor Diane Holmes, Chair of Ottawa’s Board of Health. “Walkable neighbourhoods give people opportunities to get active in their daily routines, which helps address current high rates of obesity and physical inactivity and associated chronic disease in our city.”

The Ottawa Pedestrian Plan supports the City’s Official Plan and Transportation Master Plan. It proposes enhancements – within an affordability framework – to the pedestrian network through planning and design, safety and promotion, maintenance and rehabilitation.

In August, the City also had the honour of being the first city in the province to receive the gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community Award by Share the Road Cycling Coalition, a cycling advocacy organization that works with Ontario municipalities to make their communities more bicycle-friendly.
