Ottawa – On Thursday, November 28, work will commence on Elgin Street at Isabella Street for the replacement of a combined sewer. The work will occur along southern tip of Elgin Street (between Isabella Street and Pretoria Avenue) to replace an aging combined sewer. Traffic modifications will also be implemented to improve pedestrian and cycling safety.
Beginning November 28, Commuters will have limited access to the right turn lane onto Queen Elizabeth Drive southbound, and reduced access from Queen Elizabeth Drive to Pretoria Avenue. This work will last approximately one week. Upon completion of this work, the current one way section of Elgin Street from Isabella Street to Pretoria Avenue will be permanently closed.
Beginning December 2, the right northbound lane on Elgin Street will be closed after the morning peak period every day. This work will last approximately two weeks.
During this construction period there will be minimal impact on commuters, although motorists are reminded to reduce speed when traveling through construction zones. Cyclists may experience some encroachment onto the existing cycling lanes; however, they will remain open and temporary curbs and sidewalks will be installed to maintain pedestrian access. Further mobility impacts will be reported as they occur.
The Elgin Street at Isabella Street Combined Sewer Replacement Project is a $2.6 million project that will improve water and sewer services in the area. The existing watermain was installed in 1896 and has reached the end of its life. The existing 600 millimetre sewer, installed in 1936, will also be upgraded with a new 750 millimetre sewer designed to improve sewer capacity in the area. In addition to this work, the one way section of Elgin Street between Isabella Street and Pretoria Avenue will be permanently closed to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety. Existing traffic that currently uses the one way section of Elgin Street to access Pretoria Avenue will, in the future, be required to use the right turn lane onto Queen Elizabeth. To accomplish this road closure, geometry modifications to the curb line will also be required to accommodate all required vehicle movements.
This project is an Ottawa on the Move project. Ottawa on the Move is about keeping our community and economy moving forward through strategic investments in a number of transportation, water, and sewer projects to build a better city and create jobs
