Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson was joined by City Manger Kent Kirkpatrick and emcee, Jody Mitic, a runner-up of the first season of Amazing Race Canada, as he proclaimed AccessAbility Day in Ottawa. The opening ceremony at City Hall today marked the beginning of the tenth annual AccessAbility Day event attended by experts, stakeholders and community members.

“The theme of this year’s event, Creating Accessible Housing for All, provides opportunities to improve options for our residents in terms of physical accessibility and also in terms of non-physical barriers that also impact access to safe and affordable housing,” said Mayor Watson. “This event provides a forum to share information and best practices as a community so we can incorporate accessibility into all we do.”

“We are improving all aspects of accessibility with the ultimate goal of ensuring Ottawa provides the best services to all residents,” said City Manager Kent Kirkpatrick. “The City’s Accessibility Design Standards create a foundation to build upon and we are committed to raising awareness and implementing best practices to showcase how accessible can benefit all.”

The 2013 AccessAbility Day event features a panel discussion of experts from the City and private sector and housing-related workshops in the afternoon session. Panellists include: Christopher Simmonds, President of Chris Simmonds Architects Inc.; Donna Hicks, CEO of Habitat for Humanity (National Capital Region); Akos Hoffer, CEO of the Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre; and Saide Sayah, Program Manager of the City of Ottawa Housing Services Branch.
