Ottawa – Employees and volunteers with the City of Ottawa were lauded for an international award they received in recognition of the emergency preparedness program, Are You Ready? The program received the Public Awareness Award – Division 1 (Local Emergency Management Agency), in both the Canada and Global categories. In addition, Ottawa Paramedic, Chris Bugelli was congratulated on his impending receipt of the Governor General’s Medal of Bravery.
Mark Taylor, Chair of the Community Protective Services Committee praised the efforts of both staff and volunteers with the Office of Emergency Management for their work on the Are You Ready? programme. “This award is proof of your hard work and dedication to emergency preparedness in our city,” said Taylor. “Knowledge is truly power and this award-winning program arms people with the tools and confidence to handle the unexpected.”
Are You Ready? is a comprehensive, public education and awareness program that addresses the emergency needs and practices of residents, businesses, and private and public stakeholders. It is unique because of its train-the-trainer approach, with peers educating peers, and the program is available in five languages. In 2012, the program shifted its focus internally and the off-shoot, We Are Ready was introduced to City of Ottawa staff.
Ottawa Paramedic, Chris Bugelli was commended for an act of bravery by both Councillor Taylor and Chief Anthony Di Monte of the Ottawa Paramedic Service. On December 5, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will present Bugelli with the Medal of Bravery.
In recounting the incident of March 13, 2011 where Bugelli entered icy waters to rescue a man who was neck deep and struggling due to a car collision, Chief Di Monte was effusive in his praise. “Chris demonstrated a consummate combination of calm and courage in what would be a terrifying predicament for most people. We are incredibly lucky to have him on our team and are delighted to see that he’s receiving this honourable distinction.”
