Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson, Councillor Mark Taylor, Chair of the Community and Protective Services Committee, Kanata-North Councillor Marianne Wilkinson and West Carleton-March Councillor Eli El-Chantiry, today held a grand opening ceremony for the new $43 million Richcraft Recreation Complex – Kanata located at 4101 Innovation Drive.

“This state-of-the-art facility is a wonderful addition to the Kanata community,” said Mayor Watson. “Residents of all ages can now take part in active and healthy activities close to home, and for many within walking or cycling distance.”

Naming rights for the facility were negotiated by a community fundraising group with the Richcraft Group of Companies through a $500,000 sponsorship agreement to provide for additional features at the facility. Through this donation, Richcraft is being recognized as part of the City’s Community Champions Program; a community partnership that allows for the sponsorship of infrastructure initiatives within the community.

“We are very pleased to have Richcraft’s name on this beautiful new facility,” said Chair Taylor. “Their generous financial contribution will have a positive impact on the lives of our residents for years to come.”

The 90,000-square foot building includes a 25-metre eight-lane indoor pool, a leisure therapeutic pool, two full gymnasiums, fitness and cardio centre and several multi-purpose rooms. Outdoor features incorporate play areas for children - including water play, a basketball court, a skate park and a full-sized, lighted sports field with artificial turf. The complex also was built to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) GOLD standards including a number of green features that promote energy efficiency and reduced water use.

Early in the planning process, a volunteer fundraising committee led by Councillor Wilkinson was involved in reviewing the design plans from a community perspective identifying areas where fundraising dollars could be used to enhance the overall features. She put together a community fundraising group to raise $1.2 million for the addition of two extra lanes being added to the indoor pool, a youth room and an enlarged skate park and worked with soccer groups to fund the $722,000 needed for the turf field and lights.

“Thanks to the fabulous fundraising efforts and vision of these local volunteers, working with myself and my staff, we were able to plan for, and add additional features to the complex focusing on the future growth and needs of the community,” said Councillor Wilkinson. “As well as naming rights for the building itself, donations were given for pool lanes, rooms, the community walkway, the first sculpture in a planned sculpture garden and our time capsules. And thanks to the National Capital Industrial Soccer League we have a permanent turf field with lights.”

“This facility is also a great asset to the residents of West Carleton-March stated Councillor El-Chantiry. With a large rural population, our residents no longer have to travel as far for swimming lessons, fitness classes and other programs offered by the City.”

Patrons of the Richcraft Recreation Complex – Kanata, will also enjoy four permanent art commissions by local artists Jean-Yves Vigneau, Maskull Lasserre, the team of Anna Williams and Erin Robertson, and Alisdair MacRae and Negar Seyfollahy whose original artwork can be found throughout the recreation complex, on the roof of the building, suspended from the ceiling and integrated into the design of the outdoor skate plaza. An additional art piece, which will be the first in a sculpture garden funded through community fundraising, was also unveiled at the opening.

A public open house will be held at the Richcraft Recreation Complex – Kanata on Saturday, December 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that will include tours and free activities.
