Ottawa - OC Transpo presented Safe Driving Awards to 65 bus operators today in recognition of their long-term commitment and outstanding service in providing customers with safe and reliable transit service.
“These operators have navigated our roads for thousands of hours every year and remained collision-free,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “Such skill and focus is highly commendable, and speaks well of our residents’ confidence that transit operators will get them where they need to be, safely and on time.”
The OC Transpo Safe Driving Awards ceremony paid tribute to drivers who have reached 20- to 41-year milestones of collision-free driving.
“In 2012, OC Transpo provided approximately 101 million passenger trips, and every kilometre on any given day can bring a range of challenges for our bus operators — heavy congestion, rapidly changing weather conditions, road construction and detours,” said Councillor Diane Deans, Chair of the Transit Commission. “Our operators’ top priority is getting customers to their destination safely, no matter what the day brings.”
To qualify for a Safe Driving Award, operators must drive a bus in service for at least 1,000 collision-free hours every year. One thousand collision-free hours equates to Ottawa residents driving their car a minimum of 35,000 kilometres on city streets in a year.
“Every day, with buses on the road almost around the clock, our bus operators handle every road condition that Ottawa can throw at them, from storms to construction to peak-hour traffic congestion,” said John Manconi, General Manager of Transit Services. “We never have a ‘snow day’. Nothing stops our operators’ passion for their work and dedication to ensuring the safety of our customers and other road users.”
In 2012, one operator reached the milestone of 41 years of collision-free driving; two more operators had 37 years and 36 years free of collisions respectively, while four operators reached the 35-year milestone. An additional 58 operators achieved between 20 and 30 years of safe driving.
