Ottawa - To launch National Non-Smoking Week, the Ottawa Board of Health recognized Ottawa Community Housing and the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health as Smoke-Free Champions for their contribution to the expansion of smoke-free spaces in Ottawa today.

“The Board of Health is pleased to recognize Ottawa Community Housing by presenting them with a Smoke-Free Champion certificate for their contribution to the health and wellness of their tenants and staff,” said Councillor Diane Holmes, Chair of the Ottawa Board of Health. “We applaud them for implementing a no-smoking policy on their properties and creating a safer smoke-free living environment.”

The Board of Health also recognized the work of the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health for their contributions to the health of their clients. Wabano hosts a weekly drop-in program which has evolved to offer unique quit-smoking challenges that take place alongside their well-attended culture nights.

“Mandating smoke-free spaces on City properties was part of a wider movement to expand healthier living environments,” said Dr. Isra Levy, Ottawa’s Medical Officer of Health. “We are seeing more groups that want to make their property smoke-free, and OPH is committed to supporting them in their efforts.”

Dr. Levy pointed to the positive public response to the Let's Clear the Aircampaignand themunicipal bylaws that prohibit smoking on all bar and restaurant patios and on City properties including, parks and beaches. In addition, he said, more businesses, sporting clubs and property owners have decided to create smoke-free spaces.

In accepting the Smoke-Free Champions recognition, Laurene Wagner, Interim CEO of Ottawa Community Housing, said: “We have consulted with our tenants and developed an approach to respond to their requests for a policy that will support our joint desire for healthy communities and living spaces.”

In 2013, more than 4,300 people in Ottawa took part in one of the many quit-smoking programs OPH offers, including two-hour workshops and four-week programs. As well, partnerships with various organizations and local community partners have enabled a better and more extensive reach, all to support and encourage residents to quit smoking. Incentive-based initiatives, such as the Cancer Society's Driven to Quit Challenge and Leave the Pack Behind contests, are popular and have delivered positive results.
