Ottawa – The City’s Neighbourhood Connection Office has announced the three winning submissions in the Better Neighbourhoods Program for 2014. The three successful entries were chosen from 30 applications from community groups interested in doing small-scale projects that will contribute to their neighbourhoods’ vibrancy.
The three winning entries are:
These applications were selected based on a variety of criteria including innovation, strong volunteer commitment and community considerations including potential benefits for a broad range of neighbourhood stakeholders.
"While these projects are small in scale, they are big on benefits,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “It is an opportunity to get residents involved in hands-on projects that will help create vibrant and liveable neighbourhoods. The Better Neighbourhoods Program is an excellent way in which the City and community volunteers collaborate to make it happen."
NCO staff will begin working with the winning applicants in their selected neighbourhood starting in February, 2014. Projects will receive up to $30,000 each in financial support from the City.
"I am very pleased with the high quality and creativity of the applications we received again this year," said Councillor Peter Hume, Chair of the Planning Committee. "It is very exciting to see how engaged residents are, and the great ideas they have. This is the second year for this initiative, and it’s been a real success in bringing the Planning and Growth Management Department and the community closer together."
In September 2013, NCO also launched an online Toolkit to assist all neighbourhood groups that are interested in doing their own projects. The Toolkit has many ideas and resources for projects that contribute to a more liveable community experience.
