Ottawa ‑ For the third consecutive year, the City of Ottawa has been recognized as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers in a national competition that recognizes leaders in creating diverse and inclusive workplaces. The winners were announced in a special feature published in today’s Globe and Mail.
“Ottawa is a city composed of diverse backgrounds and cultures and it is only sensible that we continue our efforts to reflect this diversity in the workplace,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “I am proud that the City of Ottawa has been recognized for its commitment to protect and promote equality and diversity, not just once, but consistently, year after year.”
Employers recognized as being one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers were chosen based on a range of diversity and inclusive initiatives. Among the initiatives that earned the City of Ottawa this recognition in 2014 are:
“We are continuing our efforts to remove barriers and improve the diversity and accessibility of City services,” said City Manager Kent Kirkpatrick. “The City has developed a number of exciting initiatives to increase awareness, create an inclusive workplace and increase the representation of people from diverse groups in our workforce. We will continue to strive to maintain a diverse, high performing client-centric workforce in the years ahead.”
The competition, now in its eighth year, is held by Mediacorp Canada Inc., the nation’s largest publisher of specialty employment periodicals and guides. The company also runs Canada’s Top 100 Employers, alongside 19 other regional and special-interest competitions.

- Since 2004, Hosting AccessAbility Day, an annual celebration of accessibility and inclusion

- Managing an Aboriginal Working Committee in partnership with the Ottawa Aboriginal Coalition to address Aboriginal employment issues
- Working with Algonquin College's Aboriginal Student Office to share information about the city's summer student employment program
