Ottawa Family Day festivities; what’s open and closed?

OTTAWA, Ont. – Whether it be taking in a movie, heading to a local museum or spending quality time together at Winterlude, Monday is a day to spend with family.

The Family Day long weekend is here! Family Day falls on Monday, Feb. 18 this year and there is no shortage of family oriented activates taking place in the capital.

To start, it’s the last weekend of Winterlude! The fun continues this weekend, including Family Day, and the Rideau Canal Skateway, the Snowflake Kingdom at Jacques Cartier Park, the Crystal Garden in Confederation Park and Marion Dewer Plaza at Ottawa City Hall are all expected to be hoppin’!

Jim Watson will hold his Family Day Skating Party at the Rink of Dreams at Ottawa City Hall from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be free hot chocolate and special guests.

Maybe you’d like to take the family to a hockey game? The Ottawa 67′s will meet the Brampton Battalion at Scotiabank Place on Family Day at 2 p.m.

Some Ottawa museums(will link) will be open for Family Day including; The Canadian Museum of Civilization, Canadian Aviation Museum, Canadian War Museum and The Canada Science and Technology Museum. Some are offering free admission for Family Day as well.

The Funatorium Explorium is going on at the Ernst & Young Centre for families with children of all ages. There will be interactive activities and a Guinness World Record attempt for the world’s largest paper snowball fight.

The Old Navy Family Day Festival is going on from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at their Rideau Centre location. The events are free and offer kids an afternoon of activities. http://www.ottawakiosk.com/old_navy_family_day_festival.html

The Family Day long weekend also means a number of closures around the city. Here is the rundown:

Major shopping centres in Ottawa will be closed Monday with the exception of the Rideau Centre which will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Stores in the Byward Market will also be open for business.

Most grocery stores will be closed Monday.

Beer Stores and LCBO stores will be closed Monday.

City of Ottawa recreation services:

Most recreation facilities will be modifying their hours of operation on Monday. Please check schedules at ottawa.ca or with the facility of your choice.

City of Ottawa client services:

Ottawa City Hall and all seven Client Service Centres, including the Government Service Centre located at 110 Laurier Avenue West, will be closed on Family Day. Business will resume as usual on Tuesday.

The City’s Provincial Offences Court, located at 100 Constellation Crescent, will also be closed on Family Day. Business will resume as usual on Tuesday.

The City’s 311 Contact Centre will be open for urgent matters.

City of Ottawa garbage, green bin and recycling collection:

There will be no curbside green bin, recycling or garbage collection on Family Day. Family Day’s pick-up will take place on Tuesday. The collection of green bin, garbage and recycling materials will be delayed by one day for the week of February 18.

City of Ottawa transit service:

OC Transpo will operate a revised weekday schedule with minor reductions on Monday. Visit octranspo.com for more holiday information.

OC Transpo Sales and Information Centres will be open from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Family Day, except the Rideau Centre office, which will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

City of Ottawa cultural services:

The Billings Estate National Historic Site and the Shenkman Arts Centre are open for Family Day events.

City of Ottawa Archives, arts centres, galleries, theatres, Cumberland Heritage Village Museum and Pinhey’s Point Historic Site will be closed on Family Day. However, clients should check with ottawa.ca or their facility to confirm holiday hours, as some exceptions may apply.

City of Ottawa municipal child care services:

City-operated child care centres are closed on Family Day.

City of Ottawa library services:

All branches, departments and services of the Ottawa Public Library will be closed on Family Day. Regular hours will resume Tuesday.
