Ottawa - Bay Ward Councillor Mark Taylor was joined by Minister Bob Chiarelli, MPP Ottawa-West Nepean today to announce a total of $1.320 million in funding to study effective ways of protecting people from the risk and inconvenience associated with flooding in Britannia Village and Belltown.
The City is contributing $670,000 to implement flood control measures in Britannia Village, which includes $195,000 from Britannia residents, collected as part of a local improvement project, which they will pay when the project is completed. The provincial government is providing $500,000 to the City of Ottawa to support the Britannia Flood Control Project. Additionally, the Province is contributing $150,000 to complete flood-zone mapping and risk identification studies in Belltown for a total provincial commitment of $650,000.
“Flooding in this area could not only lead to inconvenience and disruption for local residents, but also long-term economic, environmental and public health concerns,” said Minister Chiarelli. “We are happy to be able to provide this funding to help support the City of Ottawa’s efforts to help reduce the impact of flooding events in the future.”
“Flood control in Britannia and Belltown has been a long-standing and complex issue. I am pleased to work with the Province of Ontario, Rideau Valley Conservation Authority and residents to arrive at a solution after a few decades of uncertainty,” said Councillor Taylor. “The Province’s support of these initiatives will assist the City of Ottawa’s efforts and I am confident the flood control project and neighbouring mapping project will result in reliable, long-term protection of property and people in this community.”
The proposed Britannia Village Flood Control Project involves modifying and replacing pieces of existing structural flood control measures on properties along the shoreline, and adding new ones.
The Belltown mapping project will include an analysis of existing flood control structures and operations in order to identify any necessary upgrades.
