Pukay: No cure, but there are ways to minimize symptoms of kidney failure

Question: I am trying to understand about kidney disease in dogs. What causes it and when do you know your dog actually has it? When do you know for certain that a course of action is due? Is there a cure? I recently had to put my dog down because of kidney failure and I would sincerely appreciate answers because my dog and my friend’s dog both came from the same breeder, and I want to let my friend know what to look out for should the other dog become ill.
