Ottawa - Mayor Jim Watson joined Rideau Vanier Councillor Mathieu Fleury and many enthusiastic community members at Jules Morin Park today during Lowertown Winterfest celebrations for the official opening of the new community fieldhouse.

“City Council committed $1.75 million to build the new fieldhouse and worked closely with stakeholders to develop a great facility for the entire community,” said Mayor Watson. “The wonderful new facility allows flexibility in the type of activities that can be accommodated from sports, training and classes, to community meetings and events, and I want to thank the many dedicated community members here today and all the people involved in this project.”

“This a great addition to the City’s recreational assets,” said Councillor Mark Taylor, Chair of the Community and Protective Services Committee. “The new community building includes a multi-purpose room, washrooms, a servery area, park support and storage areas. The multi-purpose room and the fieldhouse will serve hundreds of people each week who will use it as a place to warm up, change their skates, or hold an event.”

“This is a great example of the City bringing residents together to build a facility that will become a gathering spot for our community and allow residents of Ottawa to discover Lowertown,” said Councillor Fleury. “This will be an important recreation destination for young and old alike and I am thankful to the members of the redevelopment committee who worked tirelessly to meet the needs of our community.”

The redevelopment committee was comprised of residents representing the Lowertown Community Association, The Lowertown Community Resource Centre, The Lowertown Historical Society, Le Patro d’Ottawa, Ottawa Public Housing and the Ottawa Police. The committee worked closely with residents to create a sense of ownership in the community including conducting a community survey and extensive door to door canvassing to identify the needs and wants of area residents.

Additional park features will be showcased in the summer where the facility will be home to the City’s summer camp programs and is bustling with neighbourhood kids on any given day. New amenities for the warmer weather include a wading pool, a mini soccer field, playground and picnic area.
